The Flo Manifesto
I'm a singer and songwriter from Melbourne, Australia. I LOVE Music!!! I perform with my soul/funk concoction and we call ourselves "Florelie & the Backlash Brew". We are crazy about Soul, Funk music by the legends Nina Simone, James Brown, Aretha, Stevie just to name a few.
I was born in Manila's worst area, Tondo, and I believe that this is why I can be pretty fierce when put in a situation. We moved to Melbourne in 88 which has actually toned me down a bit. This city is practically heaven compared to Tondo. The day we arrived, I instantly felt at home.

On the 12th of August, 1988, my sister and I flew from Manila to Melbourne to get reunited with our mother whom we hadn’t seen in 4 1/2 years. It was most definitely a major turning point in our lives. We literally came from having next to nothing, to having access to what my young mind thought were the best things in life - clean air and chocolates! To this day, I still believe that they are two of the best things in life :) Now, almost 23 years on and I haven’t paid the Philippines a visit yet. Its hostility scarred me but I guess it made me stronger in some ways.From this experience, I wrote the song The Liberating Kind -
“I’m leaving you behind, and this feeling is the liberating kind. I’ve opened up my mind.. to the world… and I’m taking what is mine. I’m leaving you behind.”
